The Great Gatsby Parties

 The Great Gatsby Parties

From what I’ve read in the Great Gatsby the book is riddled with the main character Nick going to a multitude of parties with each one being drastically different from the last. The three parties that I have read about so far were the Daisy’s, Myrtle's, and Gatsby’s. I think that these were very interesting parties both in good and bad ways.

Daisy’s party was the first of the parties in the book and was definitely the least interesting. The people at the party were Nick, Tom, Daisy, and Jordan. The setting was at Tom Buchanan’s house on East Egg, the house is described as “a cheerful red-and-white Georgian Colonial mansion” so this is clearly a very large house. The main purpose of the party is for Nick to meet up with his cousin Daisy; he also ends up meeting Jordan Baker, a professional women's golfer. During the party Tom shows off some of his less admirable character traits by getting into an argument with Daisy and makes Nick uncomfortable. Tom gets a call from his mistress Myrtle and the party ends shortly after that.

Myrtles party is the second in the book and is about as boring to me as Daisy’s party but something very interesting happens at the party that makes it a little more intriguing than Daisy’s party. The setting for the second party is an apartment in New York City  that Tom keeps for Myrtle to stay at. The party starts off like the other with Nick meeting some guests, the guests being Myrtle's sister Catherine and the Mckees. The party is very basic and just involves the guests talking to each other about Tom and Myrtles relationship. The highlight of the party is when Tom slaps Myrtle for saying Daisy, ``The incident goes down like this “I'll say it whenever I want to! Daisy! Dai-” Making a short deft movement, Tom Buchanan broke her nose with his open hand.”

This slap very swiftly ends the party and Nick and Mr Mckee leave in the elevator.

The last and by far most interesting party so far in the book is Gatsby’s party in the third chapter. The setting for Gatsby’s large party is at his ginormous mansion on West Egg the Mansion is described as “a factual imitation of some Hôtel de Ville in Normandy, with a tower on one side, spanking new under a thin beard of raw ivy, and a marble swimming pool”. The party starts by Nick arriving at the party and seeing tons of people there he is greeted by a chauffeur who invites him in. Nick walks around at the party and sees Jordan Baker and talks with her about Gatsby’s past, many rumors are spread around that he is a German spy or a criminal but his real past is unknown to many of the party goers. When the party ends and people begin to traverse home Nick starts to walk home as well and sees two men in a ditch with their cars who presumably got into a car accident.

If I were to pick a party that I would rather go to out of the three it would most definitely be Gatsby’s because they seem very extravagant and fun. I think that I would like having a lot of people at the party because it’s a huge house so there is tons of room to party, also I feel like there would be a lot of good looking women at the party that I could talk to. I wouldn’t want to go to the other two parties because they seem pretty boring and I am not a big fan of Tom so I think hanging out with him would be pretty lame.
