Paper 4
The article from the BBC website raises a multitude of important issues on the topic of the present and future status of English as a global language. The article discusses ways that English is used around the world and how English has become more and more obsolete as a global language due to advancements and improvements in translation technology. I believe that this article helps shed light on how technological advancements could lead to the inevitable decline of English as a globally used language.
The article brings up the issue of English becoming a less common lingua franca which is a language that is used to communicate through language barriers. The article makes the claim that English as a lingua franca is becoming a lot less common and is not in use now as it was. This drop-in usage is due to the advancements made in translation technology. Not to say that this will lead to language death but it could certainly lessen the linguistic imperialism that English currently holds as a global language. The article states “English’s days as the world's top global language may be numbered” this furthers my inclination that as technology develops around the world English will start to decline globally.

This was a rushed blog and you barely didn’t even meet the word count. You had 200 words when the assignment was to write 600-900 words. You didn’t even mention any of the theories, the provided text much in-depth, and you didn’t even put in any quotations from the text to prove your point.

ReplyDeleteHey Gavin,
AO1: For this section I have to give you 2 marks. From what I can see, you have 1 quote throughout your entire writing and you did not show a good understanding of the text. Your writing was extremely short and under the allotted word count.
AO2: For this section I would give you 1 mark. Because of the limited amount of writing I am unable to fully grade your writing. Although you didn’t have any errors, you also had a very minimal amount of writing therefore your content was very lacking.
AO4: For this section I will give you 0 marks. At no point did you reference your wider study of language, therefore you did not have a creditable response.

AO1: I am going to give you a 1/10. Your essay only contained one quote and you lacked depth. Your description of the article was very broad and lacked specificity.
ReplyDeleteAO2: I am going to give you a 1/5 because you did not reach the minimum for word count. Since your essay is only 200 words, there was only a basic expression for your writing.
AO4: 1/10. It was clear you only had a basic understanding of the text because nothing was expanded upon.

AO1:
ReplyDelete3/10. From what you have you show a clear understanding of the text. But, given the lack of overall points from the text, you fall under the limited understanding category. If you failed to explain what you had brought up, you would have fallen into the level 1 category.
AO2:
1/5. From what you have I feel that your wording is a little repetitive. Both paragraphs lead with a similar sentence, which diminishes your creative ability and points.
AO4:
1/10. I would give you points for attempting to bring up some concepts like 'lingua franca.' But, the overall lack of information leads to a heavy reduction in possible points.
